Matthew 2:1-12 KJV

[1] Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem,

[2] Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.

[3] When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.

[4] And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born.

[5] And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the prophet,

[6] And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel.

[7] Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, enquired of them diligently what time the star appeared.

[8] And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also.

[9] When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was.

[10] When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.

[11] And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.

[12] And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way.

There are a lot of amazing things in the word of God that we can learn, discover and unearth, But, God forbid that we should do so without the Spirit of God in us. As it is written,

"Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. ’’ Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God."

1 Corinthians 2: 9-12

Let's look at something in Matthew chapter two:

Matthew is the only writer that records the event of the wise men.

How did he know these things, aside from asking Mary and Joseph, well, God, who knows all things? They were called wise men, why? Most assuredly, there apparel, their salutations, there gifts, spoke that they were important people. The writer assigned the word, translated wise, from the Greek meaning,

A Magian, that is, Oriental scientist; by implication a magician: - sorcerer, wise man.

Without going too far into the Hebrew and Greek translations of Matthew, it seems as though, just in a little thought, these men were involved in some way with the observations of the stars, and Holy Scripture, meaning the prophets.

"We have seen his star", they said.

The word of God states,

"I shall see him, but not now: I shall behold him, but not nigh: there shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel, and shall smite the corners of Moab, and destroy all the children of Sheth. " Numbers 24:17

Now, this verse obviously is not speaking of a literal star. And yet, with what we read here, there is more to it than meets the eye, and an explanation of what these men were. We are not here to try and make sense out of any prophetic fulfillment that occurred. Because it won't, no more than the things God has for you in your lifetime makes sense at first glance.

Do these things always make sense? My answer: "I trow not!"

Explain a moving star that only the wise men saw, that all Jerusalem, including the Edomite, Herod, couldn't see? These men were searching. Whatever interests they had, whatever things they were involved in was set aside. God got involved, and began to lead them.

Maybe it was a Scripture that caused them to look at the stars for to tell time and future, I don't know.

What I do know is God led them right past those who should have known. Instead, another fulfillment of the word occurred:

"I am sought of them that asked not for me; I am found of them that sought me not: I said, Behold me, behold me, unto a nation that was not called by my name." Isaiah 65:1

And again....

"Behold, thou shalt call a nation that thou knowest not, and nations that knew not thee shall run unto thee because of the LORD thy God, and for the Holy One of Israel; for he hath glorified thee." Isaiah 55:5

So, in the midst of Isreal, the people of God, people of another nation and another tongue were led to the Christ child.

Boy, it would be pretty embarrassing for someone who doesn't even know God, yet be led of God, to end up showing the church people where God is! Wow!

In closing, anyone who can be led of God is wise. Just as, “he that winneth souls is wise”, those won are wise for being won. It shows a couple of things, one; as many as are led by the Spirit of God are the sons of God, not the people who go through the motions, two; God knows how to lead, reach, and seek out a soul.

I am not a soul winner in and of myself. I don't know how to make myself one.

But what I can do is this, as it is written,

"Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:" Philippians 2:5

I can let this mind, the mind of Christ, be the soul winner in me, and then I can know even as I am known. And because of this Holy Ghost leading of God, I can know how to reach in a peculiar, non making sense way, the souls of those who want to know Him.

The moving star, the pillar of fire by night, the cloud by day... his way of reaching and leading.
